ABC's of Haggling
CAN YOU SPELL WIN-WIN? Does this picture remind you of anyone? Perhaps this picture pretty much sums up your last attempt at trying to get a good deal on some item you wanted? Well, haggling doesn't have to be this way. In fact, it can be fun. Really! Haggling is politely arguing which should, more times than not, end up in a win/win situation.
Haggle means to get a price down lower. To haggle is a form of distributive negotiation. Haggling means to argue, barter or negotiate about the terms of a business transaction which usually is the purchase price for a selected item.
Here are some more common and not so common terms which relate to haggling. To haggle can also mean: to dicker; higgle; huckster; negotiate; palter; argue; bargain; barter; beat down; cavil; chaffer; deal; dispute; hammer out a deal; horse-trade; make a deal; quibble; squabble; and wrangle. My favorite word out of the list is quibble. I think I just like the sound of the word every time I say it! ;^)
Win/win situation....which I mentioned above is the end result you always want to come out of your haggle endeavors. Remember, the goal is win/win. In any haggle opportunity, if you keep your focus on the goal of win/win, you just might come out ahead. Don't forget that win/win, in my definition, means "equitable pleasing distribution". And by that I mean the value of your win should please you and the value of the your opponent's win should please him/her. The values don't have to be the same; however, the pleasing does.
"To each his/her own". Each of us has a different take on what "pleases" us and what makes it a win/win situation. So, keep your eyes and ears open for your next haggle opportunity and I'll be here to help you through it!
